Minimise use of external links (if appropriate)

Creating a link to another website from your own website is simple and effective in giving your readers more information about a particular topic.  However, you are also creating an exit point from your website, and this probably is not what you want.  Use external links sparingly and if you do use them, make sure they open the website in a new window.  This keeps the reader on your website.

Don't employ "tricks"

Embedding polls, competitions or attention grabbing headlines may seem like a good way to keep people on your website.  However, unless there is any value in this for your readers, don't do it.  People quickly learn what you are up to and even if you get them to your website once, the chances are they will not come back.  It's important to create a good first impression, so create a website that informs, sells and/or entertains in the best possible way for the reader.  The result of this will be good quality traffic and loyal readers.

Web Design Brief

The site has a strong simple design using the blue from the logo. This is framed by grey, which is a good neutral colour that works well for the subsections which introduce different colours.

The links down the right hand side emphasise the importance of the product images and videos.  A video playlist has been added from YouTube.

iPhone App of the Week – My Fitness Pal

iphone app my fitness pal

With Christmas just around the corner we thought an iPhone app that will help you lose those Christmas kilos would be invaluable (and free!).  My Fitness Pal is an incredibly easy to use app.  Every time you eat you update the app with the food you consumed.  They have a massive database to search so entering in the items is a breeze.  The calorie count goes up until you reach your target amount of calories for the day and then it warns you to consume no more.

We love this app for its simplicity and functionality.

The app is also available for Android.  The Blackberry version is coming soon.  Visit the website for more details and let us know what you think.
