Firefox Safest Browser

Posted under Latest News by Adam Guerin

Secure InternetFirefox has just been identified as the most secure and safe browser available. This is great news, considering Mozilla’s recent and long awaited release of Firefox version 3.

A study was carried out to: “Understand the Web browser threat: Examination of vulnerable online Web browser populations and the insecurity iceberg” - quite a mouthful. In essense this simply means they tested the browsers not only from a technical security point of view, but how intuitive they were to use in a safe and friendly way.

There’s no point having the most secure browser in the world if it’s easy to get lured into a fake phishing website and you enter your bank details into a fake bank login form.

The new generation of browsers include phishing filters and other tools to help users protect themselves, and Firefox has come up on top of them all.

What was quite scary is that the study found that less than 60 percent of people use up-to-date and fully patched Web browsers. That’s almost half of all people surfing with old browsers vulnerable to secuirity flaws and scamming.

It’s absolutely vital that you keep all of your software up to date and patched. Old browsers exponentially increases the chance for remote attacks executed by hackers.

The study also found that Firefox users were the most likely to use the latest version, with an overwhelming 83.3 percent running an updated browser on any given day. The study also showed that the majority of Safari users (65.3 percent) were likely to use the latest version of their mac based browser.

Opera ranked slightly higher than IE, with about 56 percent of users who said that they have applied the latest version of the browser to their computer.

FF is a great browser - it’s come a long way since Netscape. I still prefer IE over it though.
