No R18+ For Australian Gamers

Posted under Latest News by Adam Guerin

R18+There’s been a lot of internet chatter and discussion over the last few weeks about the lack of a R18+ classification for Australia.

Just recently the OFLC refused to classify a new game, Fallout 3, which has caused outrage amongst gamers and libertarians alike. The game was refused a classification because Australia doesn’t have a R18 for gamers - only movies.

That means that any game that would normally be suitable only for adults is completely banned in the country.

In a highly unusual move and due to the amount of pressure that was resulting from an wave of complaints coming in from the gaming and internet community, The Attorney General has released a letter to the gaming community in relation to his refusal to change the laws and allow a R18+ classification for Aussie gamers.

Crazy isnt it. We can go and rent R18 movies with violence and drugs beyond comprehension, but we cant play a game?

  2. tomc67 Said,

I can’t believe they banned Fallout 3! Absolutele rubbish.

  3. Dali Said,

This Atkinson imbecile is a pointless fanatical turdneck. Fallout 1, 2 and Fallout Tactics had drug use as a means to enhance character abilities. They all passed with MA15+. You slaughter, maim and murder the hell out of people to steal and deal drugs EVEN in the modified version of GRAND THEFT AUTO IV but we can still buy it at MA15+. There is a big inconsistency with this fools reasons and he should lose his job for making Australia look like a ultra conservative pathetic country. We are the laughing stock of the entertainment world right now and this son of a bitch has just made it worse AGAIN.

  4. Holden12 Said,

Dali has summed it up perfectly. We are a laughing stock amongst an international community of gamers.

    It’s unbelievable!

  5. daverpl Said,

Shall I order mine from a mate in the US or just download a pirate version then? =)

  6. sensei Said,

We’re becoming a nation of prudes and conservatives where coddling the very few is more important than the freedom of choice for the majority.

The Labor government has always been a very hands-on one. We voted them in - and they will continue to tell us plebs how we should live our lives.

  7. Damian Said,

    This is absolutley ridiculous!

how on earth is it difficult to police your children with what games they play…you walk into the room and see them playing one you don’t like…take it off them.

    done fixed finished.

all i can hope is that they just edit some of that out because i still want this freakin game. Been waiting for too long.

  8. PtSunow Said,

Principle B confuses me… ‘Minors should be protected from material that would likely harm or disturb them.’ R18+ should then be removed from the movie system… because if I was a minor I would be disturbed by Rambo, people getting shot, and especially since around 3 people get killed a minute in that movie, I would get trigger happy too.

A torrent site is also one of the top 30 websites in Australia according to Alexia, and another one in the top 90. If they want to reduce piracy in Australia, they should include the R18+ rating, ALL states have approved it, apart from South Australia. As refusing classification to a game will ONLY attract people to download it illegally, as people would get curious to see what it looks like.

But honestly Jac– Michael Atkinson, do you HONESTLY want YOUR country to be a LAUGHING STOCK of the friggen world!? Australia is the ONLY country that doesn’t have an ADULT rating for video games. Sure I like Nintendo, but I bought my 360 to get away from the kiddie stuff and minigames. Rockstar censored Grand Theft Auto IV BEFORE they submitted it, mostly due to the RCs Manhunt got from the OFCL.

And those are my two cents.

  9. Ryuji Said,

    Vulnerable adults?
Huh, if that’s the case then why is so much available out there.
I would suggest that Mr Atkinson considers himself a ‘vulnerable adult’ .
At least he should, he is earning the ire of the every-man/woman with enough brain cells to be able to process the difference between real and fantasy.

Yeah, we ARE the laughing stock of the gaming world, not just becoming, but are in general for our archiac systems.
At least he is honest in stating that he doesn’t even consider our arguments.
    Nor our ‘rights’.
Because it appears that in his mind he is the holy be all and end all for every vulnerable child and adult out there.
He doesn’t even like his two ADULT children playing games.
Unless they are somewhat mentally retarded ( a good possibility from the sounds of the source of their genetic material ) then he has 0 right to police them. THEY ARE ADULTS! What right do you have to thrust your moral tirade concerns upon them when they are old and mature enough to look after and be responsible for themselves?

If a parent should always be responsible for their children no mater their age, then why isn’t that thought applied across the board in all aspects? A lot more senior citizens would be in prison for a start.
A twisted world view indeed doth this Atto hold. Hopefully he either gets his arse voted out quickly, or the rest of OZ just ignores his petty cries in the night on morality and gets on with the rest of the world.
