SEO: How to rank above the other 357 million websites

google seo

We read recently that there are now 357 million websites in the world.  That’s a lot of websites to rank ahead of!

So how do Nutwork SEO (search engine optimise) your website so it ranks above all the others trying to do the same?

Well, there are three main pillars in SEO – content, backlinks, traffic.

Content

This is the written word on your website.  This must be relevant, unique and constantly updated.  A really good way to keep your content up to date is to have a blog or a news feed, such as the one you are reading right now.

Backlinks

This is also known as link building.  This is the process of creating links from other websites towards your own.  The more links you have from high ranking websites the better.  It’s like a popularity contest.  The more popular your website is, the better it will rank.  Nutwork can create these high quality links towards your website.

Traffic

Traffic is again part of the popularity contest.  If Google sees lots of people visiting your website then it will assume that you are popular and a good result to return in a search.  Traffic generally comes if your backlinks and content is good.  Online marketing is also a good way to drive traffic to your website.

There are more magic herbs and spices required, but these are the main things you need to ensure your website is SEO‘d to the max!

How well does your website rank in Google?

This is a question we often ask people when they come in ask for a website redesign.  Most people do not know the answer. However, Nutwork can issue them with a very detailed Search Engine Ranking report which tells them exactly where their website ranks for a particular set of keywords.  This report gives you your exact ranking which is not the same as you physically typing in your keywords to Google and seeing where you rank.  The problem which using the latter method is that Google skews your search results towards your own website.  It sees that you have visited your website many times and then decides that it is an important result for you.  It is not necessarily how your website will rank for other people searching for you business!

One of our great rankings success stories is a website called Pizza Base.  They came to us about a year ago saying that they wanted to rank on page one of Google for a set of ten keywords.  As of today they rank on page one for nine of them, and first result on page two for the other one.

Keyword Google Rank
pizza flour 2
pizza base 3
make pizza dough 4
pizza dough 7
make pizza 7
pizza base recipe 8
pizza recipe 9
pizza recipes 9
how to make pizza 10
pizza dough recipe 11

Pretty impressive results! It just goes to show with a lot of knowledge, a bit of hard work and some time great rankings for your website in Google are possible.

SEO: How to optimise your website – Tip #12

Increase the keyword density on your website

If you want your website to be found be Google, you need to pack your website full of your keywords.  Not to the extent that it becomes unreadable for your users, but enough that Google will rate your website highly for those keywords.  It’s a balancing act that you need to get right.

What is the correct keyword density for your website?

Eh, how long is a piece of string?  Each website is different, and it depends on what your competitors are doing with their websites.

Our top tip, is write your website content for your end-users while keeping an awareness to pack your keywords in.

(The word “website” appears in this article 9 times – thats probably a good number if that’s the keyword you are targeting!)

SEO: How to optimise your website – Tip #7

Another great tip for optimising your website is to put your keywords in bold.

This helps your readers by highlighting the most important keywords on your website.  More importantly, however, Google and other search engines put a slighly heavier weight on bolded text.

Therefore,  the term “website optimisation for search engines” will not score as highly as “website optimisation for search engines“.

Bonus SEO Tip: you can also put your keywords in italics to give them a small SEO boost aswell.

Simple, but effective!
