Cuil, pronounced “cool” is the latest Search Engine challenge to Google. However, this 30 man team internet start up has ex Google employee’s on board to help them fashion out a new type of search engine.

The recent launch got big press attention from The New York Times, and focused mainly on their technical credibility which includes search heavy weights such as Tom Costello and a lot of ex-Google staff who are vying to out do and best Google at it’s own game.

Cuil is taking a new approach to search however which seems to be it’s biggest point of difference. Google did much the same thing when it knocked Yahoo of the top of the Perch – Yahoo having always been an information portal Google came along with a nice clean Search page as it’s main page – removing all the noise and making it useful to a lot of people.

Google to Share Secret Search Formula

GoogleGoogle is set to adopt a much more open approach in regards to the magic algorithm it uses for its search engine.

Google’s vice president of engineering, Udi Manber, made the announcement on Google’s corporate blog as part of a “renewed effort” to open up the company’s secrets.

Google has to date maintained an extremely guarded stance on its formula in order to prevent abuse and to stave off competition.

“But being completely secretive is not ideal, and this blog post is part of a renewed effort to open up a bit more than we have in the past,” said Manber.

Yahoo Custom Search

YahooFinally it looks like Yahoo is now offering those websites who wish to use it’s search facilities – the ability to customise the look and feel of the search. This allows you to embed the search services into your own website.

Yahoo has introduced a software development tool that lets outside parties create customised views of Yahoo Web search results.

Making good on one piece of a strategy to open up its core network services, Yahoo said it was offering SearchMonkey, a technology that lets website owners display selected Yahoo search results on their sites.

Google AdWords may team up with Yahoo

Senior Google executives have publicly expressed interest in a potential advertising partnership with search engine rival Yahoo.

The comments from chief executive Eric Schmidt and co-founder Sergey Brin follow a two-week shared advertising trial which many analysts saw as an attempt to derail Microsoft’s bid for Yahoo.

The two-week test saw Google supplying selective advertisements served to Yahoo search engine users.
